6th June 1812: Shots fired close to the owner of Foster's Mill, near Horbury

At 11.00 a.m. on Saturday 6th June 1812, apparent shots from a musket were fired at Mr. Foster, the owner of the Mill attacked by Luddites almost two months previously. The shots passed very close to Foster.

Foster saw the culprit, Joseph Naylor a tailor, and wasted no time in applying to a magistrate for a warrant to apprehend him. Naylor was later examined by the Reverend Mr Taylor, who found that Naylor had fired a double-barrelled gun loaded with musket balls, but that he could not have seen Foster. Consequently, Naylor was discharged with a reprimand.

As reported in the Leeds Mercury of 13th June 1812.
